The movement, or calibre, is the heart and soul. The most esteemed manufactures design, develop, and produce their own movements entirely within their walls. This "in-house" capability, known as manufacture d’horlogerie, represents the apex of technical autonomy.
It allows for complete creative freedom, unique architectural design (like Audemars Piguet’s distinctive ultra-thin calibers or Rolex’s integrated Perpetual movements), and a relentless pursuit of incremental improvement. It is the difference between a chef growing their own vegetables and one using canned goods.
